The importance of a domain name cannot be underestimated.

The right domain name should ideally fulfill one or more of the following criteria:

• Easy for a visitor to remember for next time
• Matches the product or service that the visitor would be searching for so search engines can pick it up
• Has a chance of being typed in naturally by a prospective visitor
• Resembles your company name

Of course, having a domain name which is your exact Company name is a fairly obvious choice but it may not be the best choice. We often see people falling into the DavidJamesonCarpentryServices.co.uk mistake. Visitors will never remember long or complicated domain names or just won't bother typing them in.

Often it is a balance between length/memorability and relevance. In the example above, DJCS would be easier to remember but wouldn't do the owner any favours in search engine pick-up. We can advise you on your perfect domain choice.

We have also had great success creating what we call 'satellite sites' for our clients. For example, if they have a site that sells replacement windows and their main domain in RichmondWindows.com then we would register several domain names within that sector and build a one page site upon it all in the aim of catching natural type in and search engine traffic. All these sites would push the visitors towards the main site with relevant links.

For example,  miniature sites called replacement-windows.net and upvcwindows.org would turn up naturally high in the search engines when a prospect typed in those terms. After your initial investment in these low cost satellites there would be no further expenditure saving you future marketing and promotion fees.
